Iran Refutes Nuclear Negotiations Claims with U.S.
The rebuttal came just 24 hours after Trump told reporters that diplomatic channels with Iran remained open and that Iranian officials were eager to reach an agreement. Speaking alongside Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the White House on Tuesday, Trump stated, "We're talking to them, and we start a process. But it would be a nice thing to have a deal with Iran."
Baghaei directly challenged this characterization, declaring, "No negotiation process currently exists between Iran and the United States."
The Iranian spokesman cited Washington's history of broken commitments and what he termed "excessive demands," arguing that dialogue was pointless with a counterpart that refuses to approach negotiations as a reciprocal exchange. He further criticized the U.S. for celebrating what he called its "wrongful action of military aggression" targeting Iran and its citizens.
When questioned about a communication from Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to the Saudi crown prince ahead of his American visit, Baghaei clarified the message addressed strictly bilateral matters. The correspondence thanked Saudi Arabia for accommodating Iranian pilgrims during the previous year's Hajj and stressed the importance of maintaining logistical cooperation for the upcoming pilgrimage season.
The two nations had previously engaged in five rounds of indirect discussions facilitated by Oman between April and June, focusing on Tehran's nuclear activities and U.S. economic sanctions. A planned sixth session on June 15 was abruptly scrapped after Israeli military strikes hit multiple Iranian nuclear and military installations, resulting in casualties among senior military leadership, nuclear scientists, and civilians. On June 22, U.S. forces escalated hostilities by launching bombing campaigns against three Iranian nuclear sites at Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan.
