Trump Says NATO's Strength Hinges on U.S. Control of Greenland
The US president asserted on Truth Social that acquiring Greenland is essential to national defense. "The United States needs Greenland for the purpose of National Security. It is vital for the Golden Dome that we are building," Trump stated on his platform.
Trump warned that failure to secure the island would result in Russian or Chinese acquisition, calling on NATO to facilitate the transfer. "NATO becomes far more formidable and effective with Greenland in the hands of the UNITED STATES. Anything less than that is unacceptable," he added.
The president argued NATO relies fundamentally on US military capabilities, suggesting the alliance should champion American interests in obtaining the territory. He contended that without America's substantial defense infrastructure, NATO lacks credible deterrent power.
The Danish autonomous territory has emerged as a geopolitical flashpoint due to its Arctic positioning and abundant natural resources. Both Copenhagen and Nuuk have consistently rebuffed any territorial sale discussions, maintaining Denmark's sovereignty claims.
Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen announced Tuesday that Denmark intends to establish enhanced military presence across Greenland with permanent installations.
A Danish state broadcaster reported Wednesday that Copenhagen has commenced equipment deployments and advance personnel movements to Greenland, establishing operational groundwork for potential reinforcement by Danish and partner military units.
