Hegseth Issues Warning to U.S. Allies
Addressing the Shangri-La Dialogue 2026 in Singapore, Hegseth said the US is pivoting toward a new alliance model built on burden-sharing and self-reliance — a direct warning to partner nations that decades of American defense subsidization are over.
"The era of the United States subsidizing the defense of wealthy nations is over. We need partners, not protectorates," Hegseth said.
He framed the shift as a move toward "shared responsibility, not dependency," arguing that alliances must fundamentally evolve to confront the security challenges of the future — or risk becoming liabilities rather than assets.
Hegseth made clear the directive comes straight from the top, stating that President Donald Trump has been unambiguous: alliances only function when every member pulls its weight.
"It's a two-way street," he said. "You don't have a strong alliance unless everyone has skin in the game."
On a more encouraging note, Hegseth said the administration has taken stock of meaningful defense commitments already made by key Indo-Pacific partners — singling out Japan, South Korea, Australia, India, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines as nations trending in the right direction.
"In this region, I am optimistic that our allies ... will step up and step up for real. In fact, we're already seeing progress," he said.
The warning sharpened considerably when Hegseth turned to allies still reluctant to increase their contributions, delivering what amounted to a stark diplomatic consequence.
"Allies who refuse to step up and carry their own weight for our collective defense will face a clear shift in how we do business," he said.
The remarks represent one of the most direct articulations yet of the Trump administration's transactional approach to global security partnerships — signaling that the era of unconditional American defense guarantees may be drawing to a close.
