U.S. Senate Approves USD69.5B Border Security Bill
The measure cleared the chamber in a 52-47 vote after an 18-hour voting marathon, with only one Republican — Senator Lisa Murkowski — breaking with her party to vote against it. The legislation now advances to the House of Representatives for final passage, with House Speaker Mike Johnson stating his intent to secure approval as early as next week.
The bill's path was complicated by a fierce battle over a controversial $1.8 billion "anti-weaponization" fund designed to compensate some of Trump's political allies. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer led the charge to eliminate the provision, denouncing it as a potential "slush fund." Democrats and several Republicans mounted a series of amendments seeking to scrap or redirect the money, as well as block the Trump administration from using funds for a planned White House ballroom — but all such efforts failed.
Earlier this week, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche indicated the Trump administration would not move forward with the "anti-weaponization" fund. The fund had been announced last month by the Justice Department as part of a settlement resolving litigation brought by Trump, members of his family, and the Trump Organization over the disclosure of their tax returns and alleged government misconduct.
The passage marks one of the most consequential border security spending victories of the Trump presidency to date, cementing a sweeping financial commitment to immigration enforcement operations for the next several years.
