U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa Hosts Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Manpower and Reserve Affairs
During the visit, Capt. Richard Gilliard Jr., commanding officer of U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa, accompanied Kohlmann on a tour of the facility. Kohlmann met with Sailors and hospital staff while visiting the Multi-Service Ward, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Mother Infant Care Center, Intensive Care Unit, and Emergency Department.
Kohlmann said the visit provided an opportunity to assess both the strengths and shortfalls of military medicine and identify areas where his office can help make improvements.
“It is good to see it all live,” Kohlmann said, emphasizing the value of visiting medical treatment facilities and hearing directly from the personnel delivering care. He noted that staffing is one area where continued support can make a significant difference.
Kohlmann is responsible for oversight of manpower and reserve component affairs across the Department of the Navy. His portfolio includes policy and programs affecting active-duty, reserve, and retired military personnel; their families; and the civilian workforce.
The visit gave USNHO leadership and staff an opportunity to highlight the hospital’s role as a critical regional medical asset and to discuss the people, resources, and capabilities needed to sustain the mission. Through direct engagement with Sailors and medical professionals, Kohlmann gained additional insight into the challenges and opportunities facing Navy Medicine personnel serving overseas.
U.S. Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command Okinawa supports the Defense Health Agency's U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa, which is the largest overseas medical treatment facility staffed by active-duty Navy personnel and stands at the ready to respond to contingency operations to support the U.S. Pacific Command’s area of operations. It is a critical regional asset for direct care delivery, regional referrals, and medical contingency operations. The staff at USNH Okinawa understand their vital role as pre-positioned, forward-deployed naval forces within the first island chain, aligned and in support of joint military commands and operations.
