U.S. and Mexican military forces have successfully concluded Exercise AMALGAM EAGLE 2026, a bilateral live-fly air defense and search-and-rescue exercise held from September 30-Oct 1.
The annual exercise improves operational compatibility between U.S. Northern Command's air component, Air Forces Northern (AFNORTH), the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), and the Mexican Secretariat of National Defense (DEFENSA).
This year's exercise involved realistic scenarios where U.S. and Mexican aircraft, including fighters and surveillance assets, coordinated to detect, identify, and intercept simulated aerial threats transiting the shared airspace between the two nations. The training scenarios, which also included a search-and-rescue component, took place across various locations, including Texas, Arizona, and the Mexican states of Nuevo León and Baja California Sur.
The exercise reinforces the strong defense relationship between the United States and Mexico, enhancing shared security and the ability to collaboratively respond to aerial challenges.
"AMALGAM EAGLE is a cornerstone of our theater security cooperation efforts and demonstrates our unwavering commitment to the shared defense of North America," said Lt. Gen. Bradford Everman, commander, Continental U.S. NORAD Region, First Air Force (AFNORTH), and Air Forces Space. "The professionalism and seamless collaboration displayed by our forces and our vital partners from the Mexican Armed Forces are a testament to our enduring partnership. Every year, this exercise sharpens our collective skills, ensuring we are always ready to protect our homelands from any air threat. Our strength lies in our unity and our shared resolve to keep our skies safe."
AMALGAM EAGLE 26 involved close coordination between military air operations centers and civilian air traffic control agencies in both countries, including the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and Mexico's Services to Navigation in the Mexican Air Space (SENEAM). This interagency cooperation is critical to maintaining air sovereignty and security.
The exercise is a key component of the ongoing military-to-military cooperation between the United States and Mexico, designed to build trust, enhance interoperability, and provide for the mutual defense of North America.
